Like a lot of people, pencil & watercolor were my first tools, along with crayons. I’ve long since ditched the crayons and upgraded the pencils and watercolors, but I still use them almost daily alongside oil paints.

Most of my paintings begin as pencil drawings. Once the drawing is done I have a pretty solid idea of whether the piece is meant to be watercolor or oil paints.

In today’s digital world a lot of artists have abandoned pencils and sketch digitally, but I don’t think I’ll ever give up the feeling of pencil on paper.
