Growing up next to a lake is bound to fill a child’s wild imagination with images of monsters and mermaids alike. Sometimes I thought I could see something strange in the water and other times I swore I heard laughing and singing from somewhere down the shore.

Bodies of water have been playing strange tricks on landlubbers and sailors alike since the dawn of water travel. Water lapping against objects and wind whistling through caves and gaps have tricked many a poor soul into a watery grave.

I don’t feel too bad for thinking I was hearing mermaids up there at the mountain lake I grew up near. Besides, who knows? Maybe I did hear a siren or two.
